9/7/19 Racing Recap

By Greg Hildebrand

PLYMOUTH—The intensity on the track has picked up as the season is winding down. Saturday is the Championship Night for Plymouth Speedway and drivers are anxious to pick up any points they can get.

You could tell the night was going to be exciting as the drivers seemed to all be driving with their elbows up in the heat races. Every point at this stage of the season could mean a position in the final standings and no one was going to leave anything on the table.

The UMP Modifieds had a full field with 28 cars signing in for the nights racing. Heat winners included Zeke McKenzie, Mike Hohlbein, Justin Gregory and Dillon Nusbaum.

Bradley Jameson tangled with a car in his heat and would score a DNF. Starting on the tail of the B main Jameson was able to win the B to transfer to the A main. Jameson would go on to pick up the hard charger of the A moving from a 17 starting position up to 4 just missing a spot on the podium. Finishing one spot ahead of Jameson was Jeffery Erickson Jr. last weeks winner and also passing a lot of racers starting in the 12 position.

The story of the evening in Modifieds was Dillon Nusbaum picking up his first win of the season starting 7th and moving forward steady to get the lead and hang on to the win. Dylan Woodling would start second and finish second but it was anything but a tame ride for Woodling moving up to the lead for a while and then as far back as fourth, to battle back and get the runners up spot.

Frank Marshall would run a safe race up on the cushion finishing seventh and maintaining his lead in the class. Matt Mitchell moved up into the second position 168 points out and Jameson is closing in on third only 8 points out.

Super Street also had a nice turnout with 20 cars in the feature. Kody Conner would start on the pole with Chris Tippit alongside and they battled tight but clean most of the feature trading spots with Tippit getting the lead late and keeping it to the finish.

Shaun Wiltjer would stand on the last step of the podium from his 5th place starting spot and the points leader Ron Wilkes would finish safely in fourth to keep the points lead over Calvin Peek Jr. by 73. Peek would race towards the front of the pack but would have to settle for 6 behind David Short.

Thunder Stocks started 19 cars in the feature with Lee Hall on the point. Jacob Kolwyck would start second and finish third behind Wally Kerst who started third. R J Akers started seventh and would finish 4 in the shortened main event.

From Akers on back the chrome horn seemed to be the order of the day as bumping for position left cars spinning, parts falling off and what looked more like an enduro race than a 20 lap feature. After several extended yellow flags to get the field sorted, stray parts collected and damaged cars off the track, the race was shortened by a hand full of laps.

Lee Hall leads the points race with RJ Akers in second and Shane Sanders in third. While Hall may have the season championship in hand with a 128 point lead, second on back to ninth are all just a handful of points from gaining a position or losing a position. This points race could lead to another hard racing feature Saturday night where every position is going to have an affect on the final point standings.

The final race of the evening was the 600 non-wing mini sprints with a new face on the podium. Keith Ousley in only his second night out in the mini sprints was able to hold off most of the charging field to capture second place from his pole position starting spot. Bruce Clay would start second and finish in third with the hard charging Dylan Woodling starting fifth and getting past on the cushion to capture the win. Points leader Chad Hartzell would start ninth and having a good seat to most if not all of the incidents on the track was able to keep his nose clean and finish fourth for a great points night in his battle to capture a fourth season championship.

Woodling won his heat earlier in the evening and young Abby Hohlbein would lead the way to capture her first heat win.

Hartzell is leading the points over Ed Cleveland by a slim 53 point margin. Cleveland tangled with another car early in the feature putting him hard into one of the concrete barriers and bent the rear axle. He battled a bucking car the remainder of the race to finish seventh and keep his championship hopes alive for another week.

While the five regular racing divisions are finishing up their season this week at Plymouth Speedway there is still a lot of exciting racing left on the schedule. Sept. 21 the Fall Wing Fling will pit the 410 winged sprints of the Sprints On Dirt series vs the 360 winged sprints of the Great Lake Sprint Series on the same track. Will it be as simple as the more horses of the 410 winning or will the one of the 360 sprints get hooked up and take the checkers. It wouldn’t be the first time a 360 as parked it in front of a field of 410 sprints. The mini stock 4 cylinder cars will make their return to the speedway and the Non-wing 600s will be racing on the small track for cash and a trophy, no points.

Wrapping up the month of September will be the Hoosier Autumn Classic a two day speed fest for the American Ethanol Late Model Tour. Friday Sept. 27 will feature two 25 lap qualifiers that will pay $2,500 to win and the top four in points will lock into the 50 lap $12,000 to win event on Saturday.

The dirt late models only make a couple stops a year at the Plymouth Speedway and these headliners will be here for the entire weekend.

The last event on the speedway calendar is the season championship for the AMA Vintage Flat Track motorcycles. These exciting racers have never raced on the clay at the Playground of Power but their season ending event is a two day event Oct. 12 and 13 here in Plymouth. You will not want to miss this inaugural event.
