Two first time winners and two track champions get wins at Plymouth SpeedwayBy Greg Hildebrand
PLYMOUTH—Four features Saturday night had two first time feature winners and two former track champs picking up wins. Cody Williams, of Rensselear, and RJ Akers, of Portage, both captured their first feature checkered flags. Derek Losh reigning Modified track champion and David Short, 2015 Super Sports track champion, also picked up feature wins.
Super Streets lined up 18 cars for the 20 lap feature with Joey Spiewak and Bob McLean starting on the front row.
Short started in 3rd and moved up to the lead after a couple laps but the racing was tight up front with Spiewak running hard with Calvin Peek Jr., Shaun Wiltjer and Ron Wilkes. Wiltjer had moved up to second and from his eighth starting spot at the half way point in the race. A yellow flag on lap eleven had Short, Wiltjer, Spiewak and Peek Jr. restarting at the front. A lap latter and Wiltjer competing hard for the lead looped it in turn two sending him to the tail. Wiltjer would battle back to finish eighth.
Spiewak battled in the second spot while Peek Jr. and Wilkes both raced him hard looking for an opportunity to get past. With just a hand full of laps remaining Spiewak found himself rooted up out of the inside line on the track getting dropped to fifth, were he would finish. Short, Peek Jr. and Wilkes would finish in that order.
Modifieds would also have a tough make your own space feature with several of the favorites starting several rows back in the 21 car feature. Cameron Head and Matt Mitchell would start on the front row and both would battle at the front for the first half of the race. Todd Sherman started third and would race at the lead for a good part of the first half of the race while spots were being swapped behind him. Frank Marshall started fourth and stayed in third and fourth as things were getting sorted out. Zeke McKenzie and Derek Losh started sixth and seventh and both were moving forward from the drop of the green flag. McKenzie had moved up to the third spot and found himself facing the wrong direction while battling hard to get to the lead. McKenzie would restart at the rear of the field moving up to ninth on the long green flag second half of the race. Losh would get the lead shortly after the restart and was able to get out to a moderate lead with Marshall and Sherman a safe distance behind. The long green had lapped traffic coming into play with Marshall getting within striking distance while Losh worked traffic. But Losh was able to get through traffic and wrap up the win. Marshall finished second, followed by Sherman and a steady Bobby Stremme.
Thunder Stocks lined up 23 cars for the 20 lap feature with some help in getting everyone where they needed to be. A couple short green flag runs at the start didn’t let anyone get away keeping the front of the field in touch with a couple hard chargers with tough starting spots. Eventual winner RJ Akers was one of those with a seventh starting spot he was able to keep the front of the field within striking distance. Has the race settled into a long green flag Akers was able to get through to take the lead with Kory Glassburn and Lee Hall a couple car lengths behind. Shane Sanders finished fourth from tenth and Clint Hall raced at the front of the field the entire race coming home fifth.
The always tight racing 600s lived up to their billing by providing an exciting feature with several early yellows for some contact and spins but the front of the field didn’t seem to change much. Cody Williams started fifth was able to get past Garrett Goodwin before the half way mark and was able to keep just behind him as they raced up to lapped traffic. Ed Cleveland started eighth made his way to third finishing there. Noah Miller finished fourth starting eleventh would be the hard charger of the race but Chad Hartzell starting 13th and finishing sixth is also worth a mention. Biggest mover for the 600s would have to be Dalton Richards of Lowell, Ind. Richards started at the tail of the B Feature grabbing the final transfer spot, starting on the tail of the A moving up steadily to finish 11 just missing a top ten finish in the A.
Next week’s show promises to bring another night of high car counts and tight racing as the Crate Late Models will make their season premier at the Plymouth Speedway. $1,500 dollars to win will be on the line for Late Models and the popular Super Streets. Thunder Stocks will be racing for a special $800 to win paycheck with UMP Modifieds and CSR Sprints sharing the card. Fans will want to get there early as Hot Laps start at 6 p.m. with racing action getting underway at 7 p.m. Adult tickets are $20 with youngsters 6 to 12 are $5 and racing fans under 5 get in free.
